"ie" を付けて愛嬌のある Aussie Slang に

今回は､比較的 Aussie と話す機会が多かった。
不勉強のせいで､前回に比べて英語力は格段に落ちている。それもビールを飲みながらだから､'Pardon?' 'Excuse me?' 'What did you say?' などと､何度も訊きかえしながらの会話である。
こういうときには 'Pardon me?' だけでは恥ずかしいので､いろんなきき方を用意しておいた方がいい(笑)。

そんな会話の途中で耳にしたいくつかの Aussie Slang の中で､何となく「かわいいな！」と思ったのが､名詞の語尾に "ie" を付けて一種の親しみを込めて表現する習慣だった。

オーストラリアあるいはオーストラリア人を "Aussie" といい､野菜 'vegetables' を "veggies" という。
また､"barbie" は 'barbecue' のことであって､「バービー人形」ではない。
よく飲んだビールの小瓶を 'stubby' というが､これも "stubbie" と綴ることが多い。
なんとなくほほえましい感じだ。
他にどんな言葉があるんだろう？
帰る途中にケアンズの空港で買った John Blackman 氏の "Aussie Slang" の本などでちょっと調べてみた。

Aussie
noun:- someone from Australia - an Australian
ご存知のオージー。これは説明するまでもないだろう。

barbie
noun:- Barbecue. Similar to a cook out, a barbie is a popular way to get together with friends in the warmer months of the year.
バーベキューのこと。

blowie
noun:- a blowfly, a large and very noisy fly.
うるさい（五月蝿い）蝿（クロばえ）のこと。こう言うと蝿もかわいく聞こえる。

bushie, bushy
noun:- a country person who resides in the bush
田舎もの､田舎の人。（ブッシュの中に住んでいる。）

chippie, chippy
noun:- a carpenter.
大工さん。ここの 'chip' は「かんなくず」。「かんな屑を出す人」だろう。

chockie
adverb:- chocolate
チョコレート色の……。チョコレートでくるんだ……。

Chrissie
noun:- Christmas
クリスマス。Aussie にかかるとクリスマスもこうなる！

darkie
noun:- a Australian aborigine, used in the past in a demeaning manner, out of use today.
アボリジニの人を表わす差別用語。今は使われていない。

ivories
noun:- your teeth.
verb:- to play the piano
歯。色がアイボリー色だから。
ピアノ鍵盤は象牙でできているから､「ピアノを弾く」の意も。

leftie
noun:- Anyone with socialist or communist leanings.
思想が左よりの人。日本で「レフティ」といえば左利きのことだが……。

lippie
noun:- lipstick
口紅

Mozzie
noun:- mosquito
蚊

mushie
noun:- a mushroom.
マッシュルーム

oldies
noun:- the parents.
（歳とった）両親

pommie
noun:- A person from England, probably derived from Prisoner Of Mother England.
イギリスからきた人。多分植民時代初期の「流刑移民」 Prisoner の "P" から来ているものだろう。

postie
noun:- postman
郵便集配人

pressie
noun:- present, gift.
プレゼント。クリスマス・プレゼントは "Chrissie Pressie" となるの？

schoolie
noun:- a teenager of school age or just graduated.
Schoolies week is now quite a tradition where High School graduates
celebrate the end of the academic year with a week of revelry in
southern Queensland.
学校に行っているか卒業したばかりのティーンエージャー。クイーンズランド南部の高校生が学年の最後を１週間「酒盛り｣で祝った…… "Schoolies week" というのも今では伝説。

sickie
noun:- a day off work, although often the reasons
for taking a sickie have nothing to do with sickness or health but
rather with recreation and enjoyment. On a very hot day, it is amazing
the number of people who take a sickie.
仕事が休みの日。しかし､しばしば病気を装った「ずる休み」の意味に使われる。

stubbie, stubby
noun:- a small short necked bottle of beer (375ml). Not to be confused with the Darwin Stubbie.
言わずもがなの「ビールの小瓶」３７５ｍｌ入り。
しかし "Darwin Stubbie" はちょっと違う。
Northern Territory では暑くてのどの渇きが激しいので､１.２５ｌ入りの Stubbie が造られているとか……ほんまかいな？

noun:- Tasmania
タスマニア

trannie
noun:- a transistor radio. Also the transmission of a car. Or even a transvestite.
トランジスター・ラジオあるいは車のトランスミッションのこと。「服装倒錯者（例えば､女装趣味の人）」のことを言うこともある。

undies
noun:- underpants, briefs or jocks.
パンツやブリーフなどの下着

veggies
noun:- vegetables
野菜

などなど､結構面白い。

How about celebrating the Aussie Chrisie on the beach by having a barbie,
eating roo-meats, mushies, veggies and drinking XXXX stubbies?

と、こういう具合になる・・・・・・。
