オーストラリア版ジングルベル

いつも川越の大槻さんからお送りいただいている､オーストラリア大好き人間のミニコミ雑談誌「カンガルー・ポスト」 "KANGAROO POST"に､オーストラリア版「ジングルベル」が掲載されていた。
これは､クリスマス・ジョークのウェブ・サイト http://www.xmas-jokes.com に載っている替え歌で。真夏に迎えるオーストラリアのクリスマスをユーモアたっぷりに表現している。
下線を引いた部分はオーストラリア独特のスラングなどで､大槻さんの訳をそのまま付けさせていただいた。

元々は「藪」の意味だが､オーストラリアでは奥地とか未開拓地の意味で使う。
Holden
オーストラリアの国産車
ute
utility truck の略。実用的なトラックのこと。
esky
携帯用のクーラー。元来は製造メーカーの名前だったが､今や普通名詞。
boot
車のトランク
kelpie
毛の短いオーストラリアの牧羊犬
singlet
袖なしの男性用下着
shorts
ショートパンツ
thongs
ゴム底の鼻緒付きサンダル
scorching
焼けつくような
beaut
beautiful がつまったもので､good とか excellent という意味。
swaggie
swagman, 毛布にくるんだ手回り品 swag を担いで渡り歩く労働者。
barbecue
オーストラリアでは何かというとすぐバーベキュー。肉を焼くのは男の役目。

実は､この替え歌の「元歌」になったと考えられるアメリカ版の替え歌がある。
ついでだから､それも紹介しておきたい。

こちらは､車がおんぼろのシボレー Chevrolet であり､歌詞の内容はオーストラリア版よりもずっと悲惨である。
しかし､joke としてはこの方が面白いかもしれない。

Rusty Chevrolet

I need new piston rings. I need some new snow tires.
My car is held together by a piece of chicken wire!
